I’ve been a small-time guitarist since the age of 10, and like a true engineer, have maintained an interest in the construction of guitars ever since. In 2008 I built my first guitar (see Les Paul style electric guitar), largely from pre-made components.
On this occasion, however, I set out to design and build my own guitar, entirely from scratch. I sketched multiple concepts, combined the best aspects of each and made templates for each part. With limited access to power tools and machinery, this was produced with no more than a handheld drill, a jigsaw, a Dremel (a high-speed rotary multitool) and hand tools. The guitar features a Mahogany body, figured Tasmanian Blackwood top, Queensland Maple neck (laminated with Indian Rosewood), Ebony fingerboard (with Paua shel inlays), figured Tasmanian Blackwood head and Australian Myrtle cover plates.
